What Is Category 1 Water?
Category 1, often called "clean water," comes from a sanitary source — a supply line break, a malfunctioning appliance, or rainwater, for example — and poses little immediate health risk if addressed quickly.
What Is Category 2 Water?
Category 2, or "gray water," contains some level of contamination — think water from a washing machine overflow, dishwasher discharge, or water that has picked up contaminants after sitting or traveling through building materials.
Why the Category Matters
The water category affects how extraction and drying are approached, including what materials can reasonably be dried in place versus what may need extra attention. It does not change our core focus on extraction and structural drying.
Clean Water Can Become Contaminated Over Time
Even water that starts as Category 1 can degrade if it sits for an extended period, which is part of why fast extraction matters regardless of the original source.
